I was on a 130 today, coming in to town around 1630. We picked up 6 passengers at the Bull Wall who were clearly on their way back from Dollymount Strand. It reminded me of the old days when on a warm July afternoon making the same trip you would probably have to let three or four full buses go full before the queue got to you. It was quite remarkable in the late 1960s the number of people who went to Dollymount by the 30 bus, and the evening queue at the Bull Wall would genuinely be well...

Saw a pic of this bus bus today while browsing through some of the late Eamon's photos. It was in West Coast Cooler Livery. Was a dummy indicator fixed to this bus above the back wheel? If not it was very well painted on!

Recorded Agnus Browne on Sky+ so I could look at the bus footage when I got in. Normally I would fast forward the ads. I caught a glimpse of what looked like an SS in a Club Orange commercial. Rewinded it to find out it was 747. Didn.t konw this bus was still around. What other SSs are still in existance? Might be able to supply pic later.

I was given a small little book yesterday - The official guide to dublin - dating from the early 1950's. Basically a tourists guied to dublin. In it I came across this little paragraph which I found rather interesting. Also in the book are a number of photos of interest but I don't think the legalities allow me post them here, though I can't find any copyright statement on the book at all. Anyway here's the paragraph...

Seen at Broadstone on 3rd August were new Ds D203/4/5; R606 still there under repair; G390 and AR438 repainted in GNR livery for Transport Museum.

New Ds to service D199 (seen 6th), D200 (9th), D201 (12th), D202 (19th), D205 (30th). D203/4 were not seen in service until 1st September.

30th August R606 returned to Clontarf, more than six months after it turned over. It was in service that evening.

I am posting the July and August 40 years records a bit early, due to the risk of overlooking them in the summer spirit!

July started with some new Ds into service. New this month were D192/3/4 (seen 1st, 2nd); D186 (4th); D190 (5th); D191/5/6/7/8 (15th to 18th) - the largest number of new buses for some time. I also recorded some withdrawals in July. These were R360 348 366 385 396 371/3/6/8. These were mostly Boltons and all Donnybrook buses that has given 20 years service, and...

Nothing very exciting this month. New Ds and SSs continued to be rolled out. D183, 186 and 187 seen in service on Sat. 1st June; D185 on 25th and D189 on 28th.
RA73 seen on route 30 early on morning of 1st, presumably on the "Workman", which was Summerhill operated (still is). R545 noted on the 44a on 5th June. This bus returned to Donnybrook on 13th June. Seen at Spa Rd. on 13th were R795 662 538 684 AA2 U63 66 C6 E132 , all after overhaul, and new SS170 171 172 D195 196....

A couple of interesting observations in May 1968.

A visit to Hammond Lane on 20th showed AR 294 296 and 299 being scrapped. Now that's a sorrowful way to start a report! AR294 and 296 were Clontarf buses without platform doors, while AR299 was a Drogheda bus with platform doors. The two Clontarf buses would have been in the green livery, while 299 was in CIE blue & cream.
Same day in Spa Rd. were two of the three Waterford based AAs. AA3 had just been...

I have recently read a book on Irish Railways (published in the early 1970's) and it states that back in 1961 CIE originally planned to paint the buses in the then new train livery of Black/Orange/White, if true, was there ever a bus actually painted in this livery as a prototype and if there was does any photos exist?.

The last bus in traditional CIE green in Dublin was R284 on 18th April 1968 on route 30. How ironic that the last double deck KD in Dublin Bus green was KD284!

I have a distinct memory of Easter Sunday, 6th April 1958. We were travelling by car from the city centre after the military parade to my grandmother's in Cabra. As we approached NCR on Dorset St., this very different, very new and modern looking bus emerged from NCR on route 12. It was R799. It really looked very different and as a youngster interested in buses I was of course highly enthused. In fact, it was the first time that I saw a new bus that looked different from any other bus!...

A couple of interesting points to record in April 1968. The main one was the withdrawal of the last buses in traditional green, R284 287 and 427. I intend to do a note on the R280s to commemorate this event on 18th April.

Only two new Ds noted in April - D179 and D182, both seen on 3rd. Rest of month SS class were being built. Overhauls noted were R541/4/5/6/8 581 618/9 620 658 660/3 672 720 732 794. Note that most of the ex-airport Rs (541-546) were repainted this month. They had...
