New Style Bus Stops |

The new style Dublin Bus bus stops have started to appear, with the first two now installed on O'Connell St. They are located at the 4, 13/A, 19/A stop northbound and the 10/A, 46A/B/C/D/E, 58C, 58X, 116, 145, 746 stop southbound. They feature frequency based timetables and spider maps for the routes. Gavin |

Each stop will have a designation for identification on maps, as per London. Therefore if you looked at a city centre bus stop map, and wanted a 4 northbound is would be listed as stopping at 'OF'. |

The first tender is for 100, which will be rolled out across the city centre. The long term plan will for them to be extended network wide. However, for the time being the the other stops on the network will (as has started) be painted yellow. Gavin |

Wow I'm impressed. They've copiously copied from the TfL design book but that's fine by me, imitation is a great form of flattery. The colours look a bit off but don't let that stop them, they're great!
Does anyone know what the OF at the top of the pole means? |

Agreed, they look superb.
Quick question though, on routes with A's B's and C's etc such as 19A, 13A, 41A, etc, the A is now in lower case on all online timetables and I note on these new bus stops also. Anyone know why? The DMD's are remaining upper case aren't they? |

If handled properly, this could be the best thing to happen to bus information in a long time. In my view routes which have regular departures such as the 46a, 10 etc roughly the same amount apart for long periods frequency is good
However there are some timetables out there, that have gaps of 15, 20, 15, 25, 45, 20 and so on etc so frequency timings is not going to work for these as the gaps are not equal Well they can put them up on the timetable as every x minutes but it won't be very accurate when the gaps are so variable. If this is done badly with frequency based and the full timetables disapear from everywhere this can be used to help abuse timetables especially when used in conjunction with the phrase "About every xx minutes" as has been seen with other operators in Europe as it makes it easier to increase time between buses as if for example under the old you have buses scheduled leave at 6.10, 6.20, 6.30, 6.40, 6.50. 7.00 under the new system it would be possible to say have 6.13, 6.25, 6.38, 6.51, 7.03 etc whih allows less buses as the service gaps are bigger, and Dublin bus can say "Well it's still about every 10 minutes" |

Just to clear up a few points mentioned...
The first 110 of these new stops are expected to be rolled out across the city centre by Christmas. The plan is to only move routes with under 15 minute frequency peak to frequency based timetables otherwise the gap is too big. In a move forward, however, departure based timetables will clearly show that they are terminus departure times (as many people believe that the times listed are from that stop) and the information will be presented in an easier to understand format. Ideally, Dublin Bus would like that new routes introduced would be frequency based if at all possible. In regard to the 'OF' on the top of the stop, the main city centre departure points will be divided into 6 stop areas and all stops within the area denoted by a letter. Maps will be displayed on spare panels at bus stops (priority will be for all timetables to be displayed first), online and ideally at other locations but that will have to be worked out with the city council. The reason for lower case letters is that they are much better for anyone who is visually impaired which is why Dublin Bus is moving as much as they can across to lower case. This isn't as clear on electronic scrolls as lower case letters can look more like digits. However, all electronic scrolls used by Dublin Bus meet DiPTAC approved standards. Also introducing the two dots into the times themselves (as in 15:45) will make them clearer too. Hope this answers a few questions. Gavin |

I'm shocked to be honest. Finally we have a bus stop which seems to tick all the right boxes. I do hope this is rolled out network wide asap.
Being a semi-regular London visitor it does depress me in looking at their network and seeing how easy it is to plan your journey, then I think back to Dublin and think "why can't it be done there?". It seems to be a step (for once) in the right direction on Customer information at Bus stops. |

Thank you Gavin for the information regarding the new stops and to Tony for the photo. This is a big step forward in bus stop displays and information and is a very welcome move. Just a quick photo below shows the simularity in the London design.

Great information Gavin, cheers. These stops look great and hopefully are the first of many changes towards improving customer information.
Can I ask, how stops carrying many routes (Kildare Street, where there are about 30 routes serving one stop) will be displayed, as there seems to only 8 panels available to list different routes? Are these stops capable of hosting the new real time information displays being planned by Dublin Bus? |

As per busy stops in London, numbers can be doubled up per tile. However, this would be avoided where at all possible as it reduces the size of the numbers. The southbound 10/46A new style stop has two blocks of 8 slots. It may be possible to fit a further slot of 8 numbers to the pole, giving 8+8+8=24, I'll have to check this tho. Gavin |

As I said before, this is a great step forward.
However, without being unduly negative, here are severalobservations: Southbound Stop: 46B is shown as "Towards Belarmine". No mention is made that the regular terminus is Sandyford Ind. Estate and that a minority of buses go to Belarmine. 116 is shown as "Towards Ballyboden", yet the only bus from that stop is to Sandyford Ind. Estate and no bus on this route goes to Ballyboden. 58C number is missing from beside its timetable on the panel 46E is shown on the schematic map as going to Deans Grange, when in fact in branches off at Stillorgan to go to Blackrock. The devil is in the detail with these things and DB really need to work hard on this. I did not have time to examine the intermediate times which are described as "off-peak estimates", but if they are as per the current timetables, then they are significantly off the mark. |

I saw the 10 one this morning briefly and did it really say every 8-16 minutes? To me thats not good enough on a timetable it needs to be broken down more. We should be having for example (Figures purely used randomly)
Between 7 and 9 - Every 10 Minutes Between 9 and 16 - Every 20 Minutes Between 16 and 19 - Every 10 Minutes Between 19 and 22 - Every 20 Minutes Between 22 and 24 - Every 30 minutes. On the timetable rather than it saying for example every 10-30 minutes. Of course the other way to do it is now is a good way to have clockface timetables for certain periods, for example in this hour range, we have buses leaving at the following minutes past the hour. One of my regular routes which is a busy route for the depot that runs it has a timetable that can have buses every 10 minutes for two hours then a couple of half hour gaps, and in the evening goes every 40-50 minutes for a while before back to 30 minutes. I would hope in this kind of thing they would not list it as every 10-50 minutes as thats no use to anyone. It needs to be broken down more. As I said before, frequency based timetables along with these new stop designs will mean the best improvement Dublin Bus has had for a long while IF they are handled sensibly, if they are done badly, it could be a complete utter disaster that will annoy more people than it pleases. |
