These aren't really known too well, but a bus stop which wears a red band around the top of the pole is a compulsory stop. The ones I'm aware of are:

Does that mean that stopping at other stops is optional for drivers, because that would explain a lot!

So these are stops that drivers must stop at, even if nobody's boarding and/or disembarking? That would put a dent into the flexibility that is one of the
better characteristics of bus service, no?

I'm curious, what exactly in Dublin Bus' view is a compulsory stop? Does it mean drivers only have to allow boarding or alighting at other stops if
they feel like it?
To be honest it sounds like a late April's fool joke if we are going to have something like this! |

Drivers are supposed to stop at a compulsory stop regardless, if there is nobody waiting or getting off, they should stop.
Other stops require people to signal the driver to stop. Thats the difference. |

I just don't get the idea of this? All it's going to do is increase journey times and therefore possibly increase the number of buses required to run a
timetable due to the time lost stopping for no good reason?
Waste of resources if you ask me, what will a driver do? Pull up to stop, open doors, wait 10 seconds, close doors, drive off? Absolutely ridiculous.

Sure we have a union leaflet doing the rounds saying 'Dont stop' at any stop if you think its unsafe - its your licence! No driver is going to stop at
an unmanned stop. It didnt work in the last decade!

I would love to see the reaction if the driver pulls up at a "compulsary stop" with a full bus.
Skulls: "What do you mean we can't get on?" Driver: "The bus is full" Skulls: "Why did you stop then if you're not going to let us on?" Driver: "Because this is a compulsary stop" Skulls: "Ya Wha!" |

What is the purpose of these stops? I understand the difference between them and regular stops, but what is to be achieved by a bus stopping at an empty bus
stop?
Also, the locations seem to be a bit random? |
