According to RTE Radio this morning, Route 486 from Ballyshannon to Lough Derg has been cancelled due to poor loads. Lough Derg is open as a pilgrimage site
from 1st June to 15th August every year. From some time in the 19th century to 1954, special trains brought pilgrims there every day. After that, buses
operated from Dublin, Sligo and Galway. The Dublin route was one of the first express services in the 1960s. In more recent years, the only service has been
Route 486 from Ballyshannon, which connected with buses to and from Dublin and Galway.
There must have been no advance notice of this change. Bus Eireann timetable for 2008/9 should be out by now, but has not appeared. So 1st June came and went and it suddenly dawned on local people that Route 486 had not reappeared. So there was a local spokesperson on radio this morning (Morning Ireland about 0845) not too happy about it.
