Up until last Monday, I had two RDIF (radio frequency sensitive cards used for ID and access purposes) cards in my wallet. The first is the work ID card - important, gets me into and out of the building, without it I'd have a job paying the bills. The second is my Luas smart card. I'm an occasional user of the Luas (it's right by my work, so handy to pop into town, etc) but i realise the money i can save on those occasional journeys when using it.
Things were going well - no need to remove cards from wallet, just swipe by the reader, and off i went. Thankfully, the office machine never took any credit off my Luas card!!
Then, last monday, I received my new and improved Dublin Bua Annual Short Hop ticket. Well, I say new and improved, but I challange this contention on a number of points:
1. It's made of paper. About 3 years ago, the annual tickets were switched from paper base to a thin plastic card format. This proves much more durable than the paper version, much less likely to fold and damage the magnetic strip. Why this retrograde step??
2. It confuses the other cards!! No longer can i swipe my wallet in the face of the card reader - all i get is an error message, and a loud noise. I've done some testing, and the work ID card is fine, but when the Luas smart card and my new Dublin Bus annual pass are in proximity, neither works, with both giving error messages??
Is this not something that should be tested before the roll out of these cards?? Shouldn't it be standard practice that each operate on it's own standard frequency, without interference from the others?? Or, in the case of future integrated ticketing, allcoate a band/range of frequencies to each trasnport provider, and once the integration is complete, reprogramme the readers to pick up all available frequencies, thereby 'reading' all cards and passes??
It's not a big thing, but it is an annoyance. Just like the fact that Iarnrod Eireann are going to alot of expense to provide a range of new ticket barriers - about time - and yet they don't include card readers on them ............ their magnetic swipe readers pick up DB tickets, why not add card readers too??
