From memory Spideog (and bear in mind i'm still a bit sleepy!) CIE and Leyland agreed a deal in 1947 whereby Leyland would become the chassis supplier for CIE under a 30 year arrangement and CIE were committed to buying Leyland chassis for that period of time. This would bring us up to 1977 when the last Atlantean chassis were delivered to CIE.

Now we come to AA1-3 that were purchased in 1961, these AEC Regent V chassis were the only AEC's to enter CIE service since 1947 (discounting former GNR stock of course) and there were a few theories as to where they came from. The one I tend to favour is that they were a kind of left over order or agreement dating back to GNR days, the GNR were AEC customers and their fleet was absorbed in CIE's on 1st October 1958. AEC may have had some agreement with the GNR regarding the three Regent V's and CIE honoured it by taking this trio in 1961. They always worked in Waterford and had a unique style of body with set back platform & stairs & a rear luggage area.

Finally I am asked many a time what AEC stood for & for those that don't already know its the Associated Equipment Company.
