Burton Calls for Anti Social Behaviour at Hawkins St. Bus Terminus to be Stamped Out May 8, 2008 Deputy Joan Burton has called for increased resources to be allocated to combating the scourge of drug dealing and anti-social behaviour at the Hawkins St. bus terminus, used by the 37, 38, 39 and 70 buses which serve Dublin 15 and its environs. combating the scourge of drug dealing and anti-social behaviour at the Hawkins St. bus terminus, used by the 37, 38, 39 and 70 buses which serve Dublin 15 and its environs. "I have been in contact with An Garda Sίochána to outline the concerns of many Dublin 15 bus users, including drivers operating on the buses out of Hawkins St., about drug dealing and anti-social behaviour around the bus stops. These buses are used by many adults and children alike from the Dublin 15 area. "People should be able to travel in and out of town without having to fend off drug dealers and avoid dirty syringes. The situation has gotten so bad that people are now walking to the next bus stop to avoid the area. "I have brought these problems to the attention of the Minister for Justice, but no action seems to have been taken and the problem remains. The Gardaί have assured me that the area is patrolled regularly by police on foot and by the Community Policing Unit on mountain bikes. They carry out searches under the Misuse of Drugs Act and often ask people to move on. The Gardai have to work with the constraints of the resources allocated to them, but it is clear that these reources are currently inadequate. "I must say I am a little concerned that no extra resources, on top of those currently being directed to the area, are to be allocated to addressing anti-social elements around the Hawkins St. terminus. I don't feel that enough is being done at present. After all, Hawkins St. is only a stone's throw from Pearse St. Garda station. "Part of the problem is that many people are forced congregate at the Spring Garden Lane drug treatment centre nearby. The Gardaί say that this is likely to continue "until these people can access these necessary services locally".
