As a former user of the 78a I have to say i dreaded getting the bus from town. It was fine in the mornigns as most of the passengers were heading to work and traffic wasnt too bad, however on the way home from town, the idea of getting a crowded 78a on aston quay plus the traffic home put me off. I use to get an Expresso to Liffey Valley from Stephens Green and then either walk home or get a 78a or 210 home. I'm glad I have the two wheels to get home now, tho I don't mind using the bus.

As regards to those who use the bus and break its bye-laws the only answer would be Transport Garda similar tot he UK Transport Police. They could also replace the inspectors for checking tickets and issuing fines for those who dont pay the correct fare or use the correct ticket. They could also go undercover on the buses to do like wise or catch them in the act. They could also be used on the DART and Luas as well as at Train & Bus Stations, Ports and Airports. They would also the Motorcycle Gardas too. It may seem extreme to go for this but if we want more decent people to travel and use Public Transport then they need to be made to feel safe. also the extra revenue from correct payment of fares would be used to improve the service as well as paying for the extra security. More CCTv cameras are needed aroudn the city to use to see where trouble is and also to use for evidence.

If I were to operate the 78a as it is now I would look at moving the Terminus in the city centre to some where else but still using Aston Quay as a stop. As for the trouble markers, I'd refuse to accept the Social Welfare. If they can pay for the drugs and drink to use on the bus then they can pay for the bus fare to Cherry Orchard! May sound tough but its my business and I want to get as many decent people using it to generate revenue so I'd be able to survive!! Just my thought on the matter!!
