My knowledge of garages and transfers, mainly 1950s, is thanks to fleet records which were given to me by the late Eamon McArthur in the mid 1990s. I did a cross-reference between fleet lists and where buses were i.e. if a certain bus disappeared from the Summerhill list, then it should appear on some other list. Transfers were also referenced against moves in, and changes in fleet size in each garage. So when Summerhill got RAs for the 16, about the same number of Rs were either withdrawn or transferred. Changes to fleet level at a garage were checked against timetables to see why a change in fleet size might be happening e.g. new route, increased or reduced frequency on a route. The other factor could be replacement of single deck with double deck buses.

Taking these along with my own notes and memories (and indeed helped by some records from others, including your good self, Oneonetwo), I have a reasonable record of all R and RA into service, garage transfer and withdrawals from 1950 up to 1982. I am missing records for the early Rs in the 1940s. Also my single deck lists are far from complete.

So a lot of thanks goes to Eamon for his sourcing of the documents. I was fortunate in the mid 90s to have some time to spare to create a spreadsheet with all this data. It does come in handy from time to time, especially for forensic investigation of John Hinde photos!
