Bus Éireann has announced plans to lay off 300 workers as part of a cost-cutting programme.

The state-owned company says it also plans to take 150 vehicles off the road, cut back on services and axe some unspecified routes.

A pay freeze and a recruitment embargo will also be introduced.

Bus Éireann says the cuts are necessary following a 4% fall in passenger numbers last year and projected losses of €30m this year.

News of the cost cuts comes just days after Dublin Bus announced plans to axe 290 jobs and reduce its fleet by 120 buses.
