Unfortunately, we seem to live in a society where drivers think they can do as they wish. The simple reason for this is that there is a severe lack of gardai monitoring the roads, therefore, drivers can do as they wish as they know they won't be caught. I often see motorists shooting down bus lanes and cutting in at the front of the queue. One morning, I saw a BMW driver racing down the bus lane on the South Circular Road, through traffic lights and pulling up behind a line of traffic, therefore blocking part of the junction where the church is on Harrington Street. usually the traffic is mental on that stretch of road in the mornings. Now, at the end of Harrington Street where the traffic turns left onto Camden Street, there is a race to get into the two outer lanes (the ones that swing around by the Camden Court Hotel). Again, motorists use the bus lane to the end of harrington Street and cut across cars just to get into these lanes or going to the top of the queue and cutting in. It is a similar case on the Naas Road where the inside lane is usually jammed with motorists accessing the Long Mile Road. Some mornings, the middle lane can be busy as well where motorists try to squeeze their way in or cut in outside Woodies.

In relation to traffic lights, many cars seem to speed up when the lights turn amber and many of them go through the lights when they are long gone red. A classic example is at the Dame Street/George's Street junction where a stream of motorists will go through them and sometimes block the junction making it difficult for pedestrians to cross.

Now, cyclists are dangerous. We all know by now that these people think the rules of the road do not apply to them. They break red lights, cut out in front of cars, etc. I've nearly been hit my several cylcists who speed through red lights. And these are the people who once demanded an increase in safety. I am getting increasingly annoyed by them.

On an episode of Road Wars on Sky, a camera crew went to Rome to film the state of the traffic there. It's horrendous. Pedestrians appear out of nowhere and cross in front of moving vehicles, cars perform u-turns anywhere they wish, motorcyclists weave in and out and onto the wrong side of the road into the paths of oncoming vehicles and they even use pedestran crossings to get from one side of the road to the other. There don't seem to be any traffic lights here, which doesn't help.
