Over the past year to 18 months, it has gradually become obvious that running the Garaiste forums at the large size they had grown into was becoming and ever more difficult and time-consuming task for the band of volunteer administrators and moderators. The workload and stresses involved were more than outweighing the enjoyment obtained, and running Garaiste had become a chore instead of a pleasure.
Rather than letting the forums "run wild" or taking the equally difficult route of closing them entirely, the management of Garaiste has, after much consideration, decided to simplify the site, and concentrate on that part of the hobby which is most enjoyable for us, and where, to be honest, the greatest strength of Garaiste has always been evident - providing a focus for informed discussion and information about the history of bus services and vehicles in Ireland.
To this end, from this point forward, Garaiste is changing focus to look mainly at historical information rather than keeping a blow-by-blow account of every bus on every route in the current day system.
To this end, the current-day general forums have been discontinued, and the historical ones now take centre stage. The definition of "historical" is taken to be everything up until 5 years ago (rolling). We will, in due course, make a "best of" of the discontinued forums posts available in a read-only version.
However, we are aware that many people use Garaiste as an information source on current events, and we would like to continue to make this factual information - fleetlists, service changes etc - available, and we will be doing this through our new "For The Record" sections, which will be updated regularly by our News Editing team, with information gleaned from various sources. these sections can be viewed by everyone, but no postings are possible. If you wish to pass on any information to the team, you can contact them at: firstname.lastname@example.org
For all of the debate and discussion on Dublin Bus and other operators services which would formerly have taken place here, we would happily reccomend the "Commuting & Transport" forum at boards.ie, which has a very vibrant community.
Boards.ie can be viewed by everyone, but registration is needed for posting, and once registered you can contribute to a huge array of boards covering many different topics of interest to Ireland.
Other Sections: We regard our Models section as being mainly historical in scope, so that remains, as does the Shipping section for the time being, as we have not yet identified any alternative forums on shipping that we could direct you to.
While I know that the decision to restrict our sphere of operations will come as a disappointment to many, in the end this is a hobby, and it is only possible for myself and my colleagues to do as much as our free time allows.
We hope you will make use of and enjoy the historical forums at Garaiste, and continue to dip in from time to time for our published current information.
Best regards to all
