Managed to get my hands on a DUTC July 1935 timetable. This is quite an interesting item, mainly due to the number of bus routes which were NOT numbered at this time. Quite a few of these un-numbered routes had already been running for some time. The highest numbered route was the 58. Now then, was there some reason why this was so?. Why did it take so long to number these services?. I have a DUTC route map that was published around 'Spring 1936' and 'most' of these un-numbered routes seem to have been numbered by then, in haphazard fashion, many from 59 upwards. Some routes seem to have carried a number for only a very short period (The 52A Churchtown service for example). Why the reluctance to go higher than 58. 'A' suffixes were given to routes totally un-connected to the plain number, while other 'A' suffixed numbers were diviations from the parent route, what was that all about, the question has been asked many times. Was there some 'grand plan' that we haven't uncovered yet?.
It seems strange that the DUTC who were very organised in numbering their tram routes in clockwise fashion, as was earlier bus routes between 39 & 51, should then allocate route numbers in such an unorganised way to the remainder of the network.
Why were some numbers 'transferred' from one route to another for no apparent reason. It also seems that some services which had been numbered became un-numbered and then numbered again, the Donore Avenue service is a case, first time round it was numbered 50A, so far so good because that could have counted as a deviation of route 50, but that version of the 50A lasted a very short time and either the Donore Ave service was withdrawn or remained un-numbered until numbered 77 before Spring 1936 which itself was re-numbered as 82 shortly afterwards. I have a feeling that there are probably many more 'short lived' uses of numbers that we dont know about. I for one never knew about the 61 Churchtown service being previously numbered 52A. Which in itself calls into question the use of the number 52A on the Griffith Ave service for the time span mentioned in 'Dublin's Buses' because by July 1935 this service was definetly numbered 51A (shorts worked as part of the Boot Inn service).
