Route 77 |

Browsing through a copy of the Dublin District Bus & Train Timetable from 1975, it's interesting to note that route 77 operated from Bachelors Walk and went to Belgarde Road with ony 17 departures in each direction M-F.

Hard to believe now, but originally the 49 and the 77 terminated on Tallaght Main Street, they stood at the end of the Main St at its junction with Blessington Rd, there used to be a small triangular shaped green here and toilets, you can still see the site today although much changed. The buses basically circled this green, in effect a U-turn, imagine trying that today.
The first houses in the development of Tallaght went up around the Oldbawn Rd/St Maelruans Park area, this was the first terminus for the new 77A introduced in 1972 i believe, shortly after it was extended to Bawnville Rd, then Seskin View Rd, then on to Bolbrook where it terminated for some years. 77 terminus | #2

I remember that terminus for the 49 and 77. I was in Tallaght village once as a young boy, probably on a "Runabout" ticket, having come out on a 77 and going back on a 49. I nearly missed the 49 as I was waiting on the wrong side of the triangle.
That was in the days of the Rs. R753/4/5 were regulars on the 49 for many years, as were R756/7 on the 77. |

During that period also, the 77 terminated on the Quays, remote from the 50 group which terminated in College St later Fleet St outside the ESB. The 77s went via Winetavern St while the 50s used Dame St.
The 50s were using RA's while the 77 was mostly R's, i seem to remember the 77 still been mostly R's even when the D's first came on the 50s, did the 77s later have an RA official allocation?. Although i remember RA's on the 77s they did'nt seem to dominate. Anthony |

Earlydays 77 and related 50A information. | #4
|
Just confirm to those who have read the book "Dublin's Buses" the start date given as 1939 is not correct, this route was up and running at least
by early 1937, the reference to the 50A running to Greenhills and Tallaght (between 1936 & 1939) is now obviously wrong as the 50A Drimnagh service had
already started, also by early 1937. However, it is possible that the 50A Tallaght service did start in 1936, but was re-numbered 77 after a very short period
of operation, this was probably done to release the 50A/50B numbers for expansion of the 50 route at the time, the area was still under development then. 50A
apparently terminated on Drimnagh Road/Errigal Rd jnct at first before extending to run down Errigal Rd/Cooley Rd roundabout to turn. Just for the record the
50 terminus at the time was at Mooneys Pub(Windmill Road).

Mooneys Pub was on the corner of St Agnes Rd & Windmill Road. Although I lived in the area and have been "home" many times, I have'nt
ventured up to Crumlin Village for a while, judging by your question is the pub no longer there anymore??. You could centainly swing a bus around at that place
in the 30's i would imagine. I think it was during the "emergency" that buses were extended to Crumlin Cross, as per the 54 at the time.

Correction, route 50A | #10
|
The 50A ran down Errigal Road, left onto Mourne Rd. and terminated at the top of Mourne Rd., reversing into Mangerton Rd. to achieve this. On Sundays, during
Mass times, it routed Errigal Rd., right onto Mourne Rd., down to the Church, while the 22/22A continued on to the 50A terminus.

50A Re-correction !!!! | #11
|
Sorry "oneonetwo", I was actually talking about the 50A when it was first introduced in the 1930's, when it first started running to Drimnagh the
terminus was on Errigal Rd near the Drimnagh Road end, a while later (certainly by mid 1939) it was extended down the Errigal Rd and around the roundabout at
Cooley Rd. At some unknown date (certainly after 1942, and maybe as late as 1947) it was then extended to terminate as you mention at Mourne Rdl/Mangerton Rd
junction in a reverse movement. The Mourne Road Church Sunday morning journeys started sometime around the mid 1940's, they were as far as i know taken off
in 1947 and re-introduced probably around 1949. Sorry I can't be anymore precise on the actual dates, i will try and find more info if i have it, i'am
doing this off the top of my head at the moment as i have'nt got access to my files here.

Hi Anthony, only getting a chance to reply to you now. There still is a pub at that location today which is where I thought it to have been, I just wanted to
try place the exact spot on Windmill Road; I would have thought of it as St. Agnes Road if anywhere! The area around there now is quite busy with several busy
shops, a post office (opposite side of the junction to Mooneys on Windmill Road), a Garda station and a chapel all in that general area. That part of road has
extended pavements so it easy would have swung a bus around; if not there then at the top of Armagh Road opposite the chapel. Getting back to DublinbusDude,
that spot is actually quite wide. The traffic layout and pavement help to deceive the triangular layout in a photo; a bus would have no hassle with reversing
there if it were open plan again.
