Dublin City Council is reportedly set to consider the introduction of London-style congestion charges.
Reports this morning say the move was revealed by City Manager John Tierney during an appearance before the Oireachtas transport committee yesterday.
He said congestion charges would be considered to ensure the capital doesn't come to a standstill once work began on major public transport projects like the proposed Metro and LUAS connector line.
The two projects are scheduled to get underway next year.
Congestion charges would see motorists having to pay a fee to enter the city centre.

My comment:
I'm no big fan of DCC's traffic management policy. To be frank, I think it stinks. It's no secret that they deliberately mis-time traffic light settings to keep traffic to as slow a pace as possible.
Their attitude to public transport when it comes to buses is piecemeal and disjointed. A bit of bus lane here or there does not constitute a Quality Bus Corridor. I do, however, applaud last year's initiative on the North Quays bus lane, but why did it take a decade to implement?
It's only now that their hand is being forced since plans for the Metro and Luas in the heart of the city centre are finally to come to fruition. If they don't ban cars from certain areas of the city and give buses real priority, the city will just limp along on a knife-edge waiting for the next minor fender-bender to bring it to yet another standstill.
