The posting I did about May 1968, with the reference to the R280s, reminded me of this photo, which I got from the late Eamon McArthur. The only bus
identifiable in it is R286, which I noted as visiting Clontarf as a driving school bus in May 1968. In this photo, taken in the early 1950s, it is on route 2,
which along with route 3 would have been its normal home from 1950 to 1956 when it moved to Clontarf.
The photo is spectacular for the number of buses in O'Connell St. at the one time. I think I can count 31. They include two GNR buses on the right, turning left from Lr. Abbey St. to O'Connell St. to then turn left to their terminus at Eden Quay. There are at least four Boltons. These would have been on the major Donnybrook Garage routes that served Grafton St., the 10, 11, 14 and 15. There is a Capetown on route 10 on the left; this is probably a Conyngham Rd. bus. The standard Rs in the centre at "The Pillar" are on routes 7a and 8, at the former tram terminus. They would be either the R441-490 batch or the R491-540 batch, depending on when the photo dates from. There is one prewar R visible, behind the GNR Regent nearest the footpath. It is probably on one of the Georges St. cross city routes, the 12, 16, 19 or 22.
