This bus is now with the Kearney's fleet in Cork. Looks odd with a C reg. Picture below.

How come it has got a C reg? Would the Dublin Reg not have been kept like RA230?

Was latterly with Courtesy, Chadderton with the registration VCZ 101. Prior to that it was N697 FKK.

Kearneys are also bus and coach dealers so its too early to say what the plan for her is , RA 266 must now be the Ex dublin Bus vehicle to carry the most
registration numbers.

Strange it carries a Cork reg, though when VC209 came back it gained a C reg too.
Other buses that have gone across the pond and subsequently come back have often got their original Irish plates when they returned, like the leased SIs and the VPs not to mention VC216-220, the ex-Aircoach buses. I'm all for competition in Cork but really all operators should be made use low floor buses. It's not fair to make BÉ and other state owned companies use low floor/low entry vehicles and then let the private sector get away scot free. |

It's not about who has to use what. It's about who can afford what and with CIE's huge state subsidies cost wasn't an issue.
Whats rong with Olympians? |

The fact is that Olympians are not low floor.
In this day and age it is not acceptable when the city has converted to low floor that high floor buses could be making a return. Yes I would prefer to see high floor buses, especially deckers run rather than no bus at all but the oldest deckers are 10 years old at this stage. Low floor buses are so beneficial to so many people the drawbacks of some of them such as the complette lack of power in an AV are worth it for the overwhelming benefits they provide to so many people. I know the Olympian is held in very high regard by lots of people and they are a LOT better than the B7TL for power and reliability but I have to be honest and say I'm not a fan of Olympians primarily because I've gone on RVs in the summer and found it was like going in a sauna(and these are "Irish" buses). I also found that they are very uncomfortable in terms of ride comfort as well, they seem to crash and bang over bumps as if they have no suspension oh and they're cramped too. An AV is far superior for passenger comfort, even if they take an age to get anywhere that involves even the gentlest of inclines! |

The private sector are hardly getting away scot free , there is the EU mobility directive that states that all public bus services must be operated by
accessable vehicles by 2016 , and after that date only accessable machines can be built.
Bus Eireann and Dublin Bus did not decide to go low floor (they were very happy with their high-floor Volvo's) , the government (the sole shareholder in CIE) TOLD them they were only to buy accessable buses from that date , which they reluctantly did while at the same time grumbling that they needed more tax-payers money to do it. (lets not forget that the state tried to block the purchase of SP 31 - 90 , and only allowed SP 91 - 120 to be aquired on the understanding that they would be wheelchair accessable) I dont think you will find many people in the industry who would defend the Volvo B7LT over the Olympian , the B7TL has so many issues that it got itself banned from London along with the early B9LT's (there were no new Volvo deckers in London for over 3 years) and you will find that most modern deckers are designed and built with London in mind as that is the biggest market into which they will be sold. Low Floor deckers have come a long way in a short time , but they have a long way to go before they can match an Olympian , which was a design evoloution from the Leyland Atlantean , Damiler Fleetline , Bristol VRT and Leyland Titan (B21) (Leyland ultimatly owned the engineering patents for all four designs) , by the time RH 1 was built the design of high floor double deckers had 34 years of refinment under their belt. On a side note , the first Olympian was built by Bristol who had intended it to be a replacment for the VRT (any guesses who bodied the first one?) , but the failure of Leyland to sell the B21 Titan outside London (for whom it was designed) led to Leyland transfering the Olympian away from Bristol. |

Correct , the first one had an Eastern Coachworks body which was designed specifically for the "Bristol" Olympian.

Heres a snap of the first B45 http://imr-bus-rally.fotopic.net/p4809950.html which my old man drove many years back for Ribble (original
reg UHG 955v). There was another built that had VRT headlights for stephensons (reg Q246 ???) http://malcolmsbusphoto-uk.fotopic.net/p1646293.html

The single swing door would'nt be common in Ireland , you'd see a few across the water alright , mostly on ECW Olympians , you can see the design
origin in the VRT body in the second prototype , there are a lot of similarities between that and the final VRT III bodies , you can see a lot of the ill-fated
Titan B21 in it also.
