Alas, that is the Holy Grail of bus photos. Often talked about, never snapped in Iraq, as far as we know.

The Baghdad KD was a protoype (red) bombardier that had left-hand-drive and doors on the off-side. AFAIK it had a Rolls Royce engine - somehow I wouldn't
have thought that an American GM Detroit diesel would have found much favour in Iraq, other than for its oil guzzling capabilities. From memory it had full
sliding opening windows on both decks - the upper deck being for women I believe. En route from Shannon it had a bang up that required it to go into Donnybrook
Garage for remedial repairs before it went off to the Middle East. I did see a black and white photo of it years ago, so one deffo exists. Indeed, I wonder if
the bus does?

I have a high quality publicity photo of it taken at Shannon. And I took my own (not great) photo of it late at night when it was being repaired in Donnybrook, next to a DF. I will locate and post both of these shortly. Aquavid |

The above are official Bombardier publicity photos, which came to me thanks to Gary Manahan. |

These are my own pictures, taken hurridly at Donnybrook where the bus called in for repairs after an accident en route to Dublin. Inside, all notices in arabic, except for the bell pushes, which were standard CIE "Push Once" . . . Aquavid |

Note bigger wheels, no fire exit door downstairs, upstairs appears to have no exit either. I wonder what the grills on the front are, did this bus have
aircon? I wonder did it have a standard brown CIE type staircase inside?

Roof dome damaged after hitting a bridge. Dome was replaced and painted at Donnybrook before my pics were taken. Note no vent on the roof dome in my photo, compared to the publicity pics. Aquavid |

Fantastic photos Aquavid, thanks for sharing. The bigger wheels make the short wheelbase look even shorter. It's hilarious how despite all the work done to
print all notices in Arabic, the "Push Once" bells remained.

Great picture. What number KD is it, and when did it leave this country?

As far as I recall, the Baghdad Bus travelled from Donnybrook to Rolls Royce in Crewe for some fairly substantial remedial work to its engine which had
developed something of a thirst for Oil.....!!
Nothing new there.....!! |

VC105 wrote: It was not numbered in the CIE KD series as it never operated for them. It was built purely for export only, and remained a one-off. Baghdad City Transport (or whatever they were called) had a large fleet of deckers, including left hand drive Atlantean AN68s. |

Thanks for that C236. I thought that it was an ex C.I.E. bus which was sent to Baghdad after ending its days in Ireland.
