Can our provincial people here contribute one Cork destination display, and one Limerick destination display, that would be typical of the Van Hool McArdle operations in each of these cities? Many thanks...

Van Hool McArdle in Cork & Limerick |

I want to give Jim Poots some details on destination displays for his upcoming kit. I have information for Dublin, needless to say, but I would like him to
represent a Cork and a Limerick destination display too.
Can our provincial people here contribute one Cork destination display, and one Limerick destination display, that would be typical of the Van Hool McArdle operations in each of these cities? Many thanks... |

Destination displays in Cork would have been displayed in English only (as was unique to Cork) during this time with the exception of a few very old scrolls on
the odd bus in the early days that were in Irish & English.
A few random city examples would have been: Farranree 3 Grange 6 Bishopstown 8 Glasheen 10 Togher 14 They would have been the usual white letters on a black background and started with a capital letter with the rest in lower case as above. KD 188 |

Hi Nigel , unfortunatly I dont have many pictures of the AN68's , and those I do the buses are generally out of service , the two below are a bit grainey
due to poor picture resoloution , but they do show the set up of the Cork destination layout , back and side scrolls were as per Dublin however in later many
of the rear displays seized due to dampness in the upper rear bodywork , the later scrolls were the same as those found on the KD's however I am told that
when the AN68's arrived the had scrolls fitted from withdrawn buses such as R's (which I am sceptical about) and earlier D's.
I will keep looking for pics and will post them here if I find any more. Does Jim have a release date for these in mind and will he offer them as completed kits as I am a basket case when it comes to painting models. Above is D 731 OOS on Patrick's St. in 1991 showing the format of main display and numbers in use but with the Via scroll blacked out. The AN68's would have operated city routes 2 , 3, 5 ,6 ,7 ,8 , 10 and 14 regularly and city routes 4 , 7a , 8a , 9 , 11 and 18 less regularly and of course they also spent time on suburban services like 222 , 223 , 224 , 232 amongst many others

Excellent shot ITV2 , and rare , you wont find many pictures of D 710 during its short Bus Eireann career.

Nigel, hopefully the provincial posting viewers can dig out some, I would also urge anyone in Cork or elsewhere who have a decent set of front, back both sides and reg plate front & back plus destination pics to forward to Corgi... the Wright Volvo single deckers for proposal purposes. |

KD 191- what was Cork City Route 18 & when did it cease?

As far as I know the 18 ceased in the early 80's however it is possible it may have gone sooner . The 18 was effectivly a works bus , I am unsure of its
route through the city center , but I believe it was Patricks St. - Grand Parade - South Mall - Parnell Place - Clontarf St. - Albert Quay - Victoria Rd. -
Center Park Rd. - Monaghan Rd. , this at the time would have linked the city certer and various city and county services with Corks then industrial heartland ,
some of the companies served were Odlums , Flavins , Goldcorp , IAWS , Ford car plant , Dunlop tyre plant , Esso , Bord Gais , and the city's main ESB
power station along with the GAA stadium at Parc Ui Chaoimh. This was a very busy service in its time and in its heyday was a decker only service , usually
seeing R's and both PDR1 and AN68 D's , I am assuming that it was post 81 when the service was withdrawn as I am told that the 218 crews had taken
quite a shine to KD 49 and were hoping for one from the next batch of KD's.
The 18A was effecivly a Match bus and followed the 18 route as far as Center Park Rd and instead of turning for Monaghan Rd continued on to the Marina and Parc Ui Chaoimh's main gate. The 18 lived on into the late 90's as a once a year special to the Cork Agricultural Show at the Showgrounds and was rostered on the day as shifts 218/1 and 218/2 , and was worked by open top D 707 some years with KD 191 normally covering for wet weather conditions , and even saw DA 3 and VW 5 on other years. The number 18 dissappeared from the newer type number scrolls in the early 90's with the Cork specific scrolls which were the ones that finished with 11 , 12 , 14 , 15 , 19 , Blank , prior to these you had 1 - 21 with a few A's thrown in here and there and these were used for all provincial deckers I think , by 1993 a few KD's still had the older type and all the D's bar 729 and 723 had them also , only 1 or 2 KC's had them KC 149 was one , KC 97 also had one along with KC 153 , however 153 lost its one when it had a rather sudden impact with a garden wall in Glenthorn Estate. |
